The animals were cut (such divas), and I came up with a new plan. I decided to go out and purchase my own camera. Great idea in theory, except I had booked three of my friends to film that evening and hadn't one real clue how to use it. Thus, my resulting project.<br />
<br />
Overall, I'm pretty happy with it. I didn't buy a tripod so a lot of the shots are pretty shaky, and in my excitement of using my new camera, I completely forget about white balancing. Kind of a big deal.<br />
<br />
I cut A LOT of footage because of this and was left with what you see here. Regardless, it was a lot of fun.<br />
<br />
Anyways, here it is.<br />

The feedback wasn't exactly great.<br />
<br />
Not to say everything I heard was negative, but seeing as I'm not much of a theatre buff and the prognosis of me enjoying myself seemed grim, I wasn't exactly thrilled to be there.<br />
<br />
Taking my usual back row seat, I hunkered down and prepared to text my way through the next two hours.<br />
<br />
Well what do you know, I actually liked it. In fact the dreaded first half I had been warned against ended up being my favourite part. Was James Hiebert crazy? A genius? Simply putting on a show? I was generally interested in finding out what the hell this guys deal was.<br />
<br />
I thought the actors did a fantastic job, particularly Ross McMillan. He played the two male roles in the three part play, and because I didn't have my glasses on and neglected to read the program before, I didn't realise he had played both male parts until after it was over. Some stellar acting right there.<br />
<br />
It was a little to understand at points and my mind did wander, but I find it literally impossible to pay complete attention to anything for more than 10 minutes, so I can't blame the play for that. It was interesting and stimulating while still being amusing. It wasn't laugh out loud amusing, but I chuckled on occasion.<br />
<br />
Most importantly, I didn't feel like I was sitting through a lecture or that the play was preaching a higher knowledge with all its Nietzsche talk, but it was still thought provoking.<br />
<br />
I do wish that the play hadn't already been dissected in class by the time I went to see it, because I spent a lot of time anticipating what I thought was coming next. The scene where Sarah Constible's character measures out the clearly pre-cut insulation seriously ticked me off. I literally couldn't focus on a single line being said while she did that. If I hadn't been waiting for it, it probably wouldn't have bothered me so much.<br />
<br />
So yes I enjoyed it. Did it turn me into a regular theatre goer? Nope, can't say that it did. But I'm glad I saw it all the same.<br />

I read through Mike McIntyre's novel, Journey for Justice in two days.<br />
<br />
Not being alive with when Candace Derksen was murdered, I didn't know very much about the case, although I'd heard rumblings. I hazily recalled reading about her when Mark Grant was on trial, and seeing pictures of Candace's mother Wilma, in the papers. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
My mother has lived in Winnipeg for almost her whole life, and her oldest child was one at the time of Candace's disappearance. When I told her that I was reading the book, she said said she remembered the case vividly. She echoed what we were told in the book, the city was badly shaken because of what had happened and that as a mother herself, she simply could not imagine the pain.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Everyone reacts to tragedy differently and hopefully I'll never have to endure anything as tragic as what the Derksen's went through. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I'm the type of person who generally closes myself off from other people when I lose someone. I appreciate the company and enjoy having others people around, but I find it difficult to talk about it in too much detail. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I haven't read Wilma's book, <i>Have You Seen Candace?, </i>but I hope to. I imaging for some people, the process of putting what you feel and have felt into words must be therapeutic. As I stated before, I don't operate that way myself, but I can imagine that it would be helpful. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
When all of us first years met Wilma Derksen and Mike McIntyre this past Thursday, I will admit I was curious to see what Wilma was like. I had read about her in newspapers and in the book, and was eager to meet her in person. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I was equally as curious to learn why she would allow someone else to write her family's story. Explaining that kind of experience in your own words is difficult enough, but entrusting someone else with the task, takes a very brave person in my opinion. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Wilma was very warm and open with the class, often smiling and laughing. Being a CreComm grad herself, she explained that she views herself as a journalist but was, as I had imagined, wary of Mike's initial offer to write the book.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It is a journalists job to tell stories. With that responsibility comes the ability to spin and alter the story to suit a certain objective. I'm sure most journalists, given the chance and the trust of a family who has experienced such a blow, would desperately want to do the victims justice, but you never know.<br />
<br />
If ever I decide to become a journalist, the thing I took away the most from the relationship between Wilma and Mike, is that respect is key. Without mutual respect, Mike would never have been given access to the family's story and the Derksen's may have seen a inaccurate depiction of their experience on the shelves. It struck me as rare and impressive that they were able to stand in front of all of us as friends and mutual partners in telling Candace's story.<br />
<br />
Regardless, the Derksen family seems pleased with the outcome of the book, which is what ultimately matters. As an outsider, I enjoyed the book. It provided an easy read about a complicated case and I never felt confused about what had occurred. I also appreciated that it attempted to portray everyone involved in a fair light.<br />
<br />
Grant is certainly no angel, but McIntyre didn't just paint him as purely evil being for no reason, he gave insight into his disturbing past and upbringing. He is still not someone I sympathize with, and by no means does any of that excuse what he has done, but it gives the reader a sense of where he came from. Nothing is ever black and white, not even in a murder case.<br />
<br />
I will admit to finding the book repetitive at times, but I do have a fairly short attention span and generally can't handle reading the same facts more than twice. The only other issue I had with the book was the frequent typos, which McIntyre himself addressed during our meeting with him. I found it broke up the flow of the reading and was just generally annoying. (Really brought out the CreComm in me)<br />
<br />
This book slightly reminded me of Helter Skelter, an account of the Manson trial by prosecuting lawyer, Vincent Bugliosi. Both novels were based on fact and the trial proceedings, but were careful to keep the readers interest, by ending on cliffhangers or writing in a suspenseful style. I don't feel either books skewed facts, but they also didn't bore the audience to tears and kept the pace fast.<br />
<br />
One of the things that struck me, both about the presentation and the book, was the ending. McIntyre told us that it was important to him that the book not end with the guilty verdict. The book was about so much more than a trial, it was about a family and the people who were left to live on after Candace died. I enjoyed reading about how the family chose to heal and respond after the verdict, and how they chose to focus on forgiveness and staying positive. I think it was a great testament to the kind of people they are.<br />

<br />
Why do I love her, you ask? Some may say she's classless, but I've never cared too much for class.<br />
The fact remains that despite her eccentricities, she has a lot of admirable traits. She refuses to apologize just to please others, she's bold, she's survived, thrived <i>(debatable I suppose, but if someone bothers to post a reply, I will gladly debate the issue) </i>and has a great deal more talent than most people are willing to give her credit for. She's a skilled musician and surprisingly, not a bad actress either.<br />
<br />
Courtney taught herself how to play a guitar and moved to LA. She decided she wanted to start a band so she placed an ad in the local newspaper. After seeing a few people come and go, eventually the band Hole was created.<br />
<br />
The bands debut album, Pretty on the Inside was released in 1991. Ironically the bands next album, title Live Through This, was released very shortly after the very tragic and very public suicide of Love's husband, Kurt Cobain. It was also named one of the best 500 albums ever by Rolling Stone.<br />
<br />
As usual, I could go on, but I haven't the time right now. Just check it out.<br />
<br />
So for those of you who have, and the rest of you who should, let's take a look at Hole.<br />

<br />
So since my last blog post was about the Gits, (I think, I can't remember it's been so long) I figured I'd use that as a nice way to segue into Evil Stig.<br />
<br />
So far all of you weirdos who don't have an unhealthy obsession with the band, I should probably start by telling you the Gits came to an end when Mia Zapata, singer and lyricist, was murdered.<br />
<br />
Her bandmates and other local bands decided to put on shows and dedicate the money they raised to hiring a private detective. They wanted her murder solved and felt the cops weren't doing enough.<br />
<br />
The remaining Gits teamed up with Joan Jett for awhile in a band called Evil Stig. (Gits Live backwards)<br />

<br />
Unheard of and probably unlikely to ever happen again but I'm ridiculously excited and since no one in my house at the moment cares to hear me go on, I'm gonna blog about why.<br />
<br />
Even though I'm broke beyond reason I decided to do a little online shopping, and whilst I shopped I stumbled across something I don't know how I've managed to live without this long: A documentary about one of my favourite bands, The Gits.<br />
<br />
THANK YOU VISA, this is a need.<br />
<br />
Check out the trailer and check out some of their music while you're at it. Yes, that's an order.<br />

If your wondering about the Blog title, Enter the Conquering Chicken is the name of one of their albums.<br />

<br />
I didn't plan out anything worth while to blog about this week so I figured I would share a startling discovery I made this morning. (startling to me... probably very boring to others.)<br />
<br />
Anyone who knows me knows that I have an unhealthy obsession with poutine. And I don't just mean unhealthy in the literal sense, although I'm fairly certain that if my smoking habits don't kill me the disgusting amount of poutine I shovel in will.<br />
<br />
Which is why I was shocked this morning to realise I haven't eaten a single poutine resembling morsel in weeks now. I'm a stranger to myself.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Few people have heard about Marianne Faithfull and as far as her music career goes, you're better off for not hearing some of it. (Faithfull in the 60's? Yeah, don't even bother)<br />
<br />
Marianne began her singing career as a folk artist; singing gems like <i>This Little Bird</i> and <i>As Tears Go By</i>, the first song ever penned by Jagger and Richards of the Rolling Stones, which smartly they let someone else sing at first.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF8lwZpzgP4_qVPa7jFpaYFjbDC5Uvrvykp6jjQj5li-eBuBJFyIichYsluhy-o_kSZg4lpye8omYGTCqZBQBnYEjdy-sUKmPMJeIU-geBTx5ViQroo932OEfZAAysspoa8z8ghkyOIJI/s1600/marianne.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF8lwZpzgP4_qVPa7jFpaYFjbDC5Uvrvykp6jjQj5li-eBuBJFyIichYsluhy-o_kSZg4lpye8omYGTCqZBQBnYEjdy-sUKmPMJeIU-geBTx5ViQroo932OEfZAAysspoa8z8ghkyOIJI/s320/marianne.jpg" width="216" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
(innocent Marianne in the early 60's)</div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
She fell in love with Richards, ended up dating Jagger, became the infamous "Girl in the fur rug" and ended up an anorexic addict; broke and living on a wall for part of the 70's.<br />
<br />
<i>(If you're wondering about the Girl in the fur rug bit, it's worth a google search. But be warned, you may never look at a Mars bar the same way again.)</i><br />
<br />
THEN Faithfull re-emerged with her album Broken English. The much too sweet voice she had been known for had been ravaged by whisky and cigarettes, while her once angelic image was just about as tarnished as it could get. Faithfull herself refers to it as "the masterpiece." It's loud, it's gritty and it's Faithfull at her best.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisU-0i5Udj5CtrubntojElnq1mTp3k8O-Jliw8T6GuSQ1mcnc-oVNUiHzUpGjfHZ6Zm0MkcKkeej5EKftowTFUPANuxbRTeoFIJnEuiGwVJU-7RHuhiI7LP3ELkgGAhLs3nSlHIMREb2o/s1600/whoa.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisU-0i5Udj5CtrubntojElnq1mTp3k8O-Jliw8T6GuSQ1mcnc-oVNUiHzUpGjfHZ6Zm0MkcKkeej5EKftowTFUPANuxbRTeoFIJnEuiGwVJU-7RHuhiI7LP3ELkgGAhLs3nSlHIMREb2o/s320/whoa.jpg" width="220" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
(Not so angelic anymore. Faithfull in the 70's)</div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
She lead one hell of an interesting life and I could go on about her but I won't. I do seriously recommend reading her autobiography Faithfull. It's one of my favourite books and is anything but dull.<br />
<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<br />
<b>FUN FACT</b> (because who doesn't love facts?) : Marianne fought to be able to sing the last song on the record, Why'd Ya Do It? The writer apparently had his sights set on Tina Turner, but anyone who knows the song knows that was never going to happen. After harassing the hell out of the writer, she was given the song which can be found as the final track of Broken English. It's by far the dirtiest (and best) song on the album. It also raised a lot of controversy and was banned in Australia. I'd post it here, but it's not exactly school friendly. Find it on YouTube!<br />

<br />
If you have never picked up that CD, it's about time you did.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoRk5-D6xiO2QHLdmeGFW3mM5CR8MyfuiSnfLcLyEZIfZvjIb5Myf0IlZ9rdP0gGXAPCvl5Qs7y-beEgPADB5VWimVwIwtTiyZ1TnrDxARbpvvssSX1g7Cg1g2EXcSFYUOwyWjZs0gnXI/s1600/biggerbetterfastermore.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoRk5-D6xiO2QHLdmeGFW3mM5CR8MyfuiSnfLcLyEZIfZvjIb5Myf0IlZ9rdP0gGXAPCvl5Qs7y-beEgPADB5VWimVwIwtTiyZ1TnrDxARbpvvssSX1g7Cg1g2EXcSFYUOwyWjZs0gnXI/s320/biggerbetterfastermore.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br /><br />
<br />
It was released in 1993 by the 4 Non Blondes, an American blues/ rock band headed by Linda Perry.<br />
<br />
Perry, a naturally artistic and musical kid, struggled with addictions when she was a teenager before moving to San Diego when she was 21. She worked a slew of minimum wage jobs and spent her spare time auditioning for all girl cover bands.<br />
<br />
Then in 1989, the 4 Non Blondes were formed which included Perry on vocals and guitar, Christa Hillhouse on bass, Shauna Hall on on guitar (later replaced by Roger Rocha after the completion of the album) and Wanda Day on drums (who was replaced mid production by Dawn Richardson.) They played around in different local venues and began composing their own songs until they got signed by Interscope Records.<br />
<br />
They released only one studio album, the aforementioned Bigger, Better, Faster, More! Their song <em>What's Up?</em> was by far their biggest hit and I can guarantee you've all heard it even if you don't recognize the name. The bulk of the songs were written by Perry and her gruff, booming (cliche I know, but it really does boom!) voice earned her the nickname, "that chick with the big voice."<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/6NXnxTNIWkc?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
<br />
The band disbanded after the one album prompting Perry to head out on her own. She recorded a solo album for Interstate records that displayed a much darker and moodier side than the 4 Non Blondes had. It was a fairly big hit with the critics but because the public at large doesn't know good music when it hears it, it didn't sell very well.<br />
<br />
Perry was later quoted in 2011 by Rolling Stone magazine as saying, "I wasn't really a big fan of my band." She felt the end result didn't represent what they were capable of and that it sounded like "fluffy polished bullshit." The only song off the album she loved was <em>Drifting.</em> <br />
<br />

Letter to God - with Hole in LA</div>
<br />
Since then Perry has also written and produced numerous songs for other artists and has worked with the likes of Courtney Love and Ziggy Marley.<br />
<br />
Most recently Perry joined her first band since the break of 4 Non Blondes called Deep Dark Robot featuring songs like, "Won't You Be My Girl?" and "F*** You, Stupid B**ch" inspired by the rise and apparently dramatic fall of one of Perry's relationships.<br />
<br />
I also suggest you guys follow her on Twitter, she proves to be an interesting read most of the time.<br />

<br />
And while you're at it, why not check out her myspace page?<br />

<br />
I have decided to go on a much needed (or so I tell myself) vacation when school ends. My birthday also happens to be in the first week of May so I'm using it as an excuse to go somewhere wicked for a week.<br />
<br />
The part me and my fellow traveller are struggling with is exactly WHERE it is we should go. The more I look, the more excited I am getting and the less sure I am of what destination we should choose. This will be my first trip out of North America so I don't really know what I am doing.<br />
<br />
So some input would be greatly appreciated, especially from those of you who have some experiencing in travelling.<br />
<br />
So here are the choices as of today (which are bound to change tomorrow)...<br />
<br />
1) Las Vegas<br />

In an attempt to avoid scrambling to get everything done at the very last second (for once) I am updating... before Friday! First time for everything. <br />
<br />
This post is dedicated to my friend and fellow crecommer, Kristy Hoffman. Kristy loves and I mean LOVES Debbie Harry. She has been talking about her almost non stop for the past few weeks and for good reason. <br />

SHE is of course, the singer of 70's band Blondie. Debbie and her bandmates hung around and performed at the legendary C.B.G.B. club with the likes of the Ramones, The New York Dolls, the Dead Boys and Television. <br />
<br />
Blondie had a bit of a rough start at the beginning. They had a unique sound, much softer and more pop-like than their punk contemporaries, but the attitude behind their music was much the same. Their song X Offender, changed from Sex Offender to avoid backlash, was about a prostitute being arrested but the cop wants "the love of a sex offender." <br />
<br />
Their big break came in 1978 when they released their single "Heart of Glass" which reached #1 in both the U.S. and Britain. Debbie become a huge star; known for her platinum blonde hair, smoking sex appeal and crooning voice. Other hits to follow were Rapture, Call Me, One Way or Another and Tide is High. <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />Debbie was the undeniable star of the group and was considered by many to be the most beautiful woman of the time. The slogan "Blondie Is A Group" was concocted to battle the idea that Debbie's real name was Blondie and that she was essentially the entire act. While she was undoubtedly the face of the group, the other members resented their contributions being clouded over. Debbie needed the band just as much as they needed her. <br />
<br />
After huge success and albums later, the band eventually came to an end in 1982. Addictions, fighting and the failing health of Chris Klein, Debbie's bandmate and boyfriend, all played a part in the decision. Debbie began to dedicate her time to taking care of Chris rather than music. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<br />
Debbie did however release solo albums, which received less than stellar reviews, but interest in Blondie never really went away. They continued to release live albums and then in 1999 Blondie reunited to release the album No Exit, which consisted of greatest hits as well as two newly recorded songs. They still have a thriving fan base today. (Isn't that right Kristy?)<br />

<br />Best Picture Ever? I think so</div>Ali Buckberroughhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02547618173638414914noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1251140957990202982.post-67985656829109744892012-01-13T18:14:00.001-06:002012-01-13T18:14:25.013-06:00PearlSo this will be the first official posting of my rejuvenated blog. I decided this time around I wanted to do something fun and something I actually know a little about.<br />
<br />
This christmas I bought a Gits cd for someone. (You'll hear more about them in one of the next posts...) It had come to my attention that though this person had a large collection of wicked cd's, his collection was sorely lacking in any chick music. I took it upon myself to rectify this serious wrong.<br />
<br />
When people talk about great musicians (and I mean actual musicians, not chicks romping around and lypsynching in barely there outfits) very few women are ever mentioned. So for each of my coming blog posts, I will feature one of my favourite chick musicians.<br />
<br />
Lets start off in the 60's, shall we?<br />
<br />
Janis Joplin.<br />
<br />
Or Pearl as she was sometimes called, is one of my all time favourite artists, period. She had a killer voice, more passion than most people could muster up for anything and balls that put most of her male contemporaries to shame. When she sang, she always went for it, there was no such thing as half-assing a performance in her mind.<br />
<br />
She was eccentric, raw and explosive when she was on stage.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I've spent countless hours (okay minutes) debating what my new blog should be. I have a few ideas brewing but to avoid picking yet another topic I find myself scrambling to write about I'm going to wait until next Friday to announce what that shall be. I know the suspense must be killing all of you... So semester one is very nearly done, and it's time for some much needed recharging. So I'll keep this short and I'll be seeing you all in the New Year. Have a good break guys.<br />
<br />
I give you Adam Sandler's Chanukkah....<br />

In the mad dash to get everything done, I completely forgot to come up with a post idea. My bad.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So I'll keep it short and sweet. I know a lot of people have been stressing themselves out beyond belief, but the best thing any of us can do right now is to remember to chill out and breathe. I've read you do your best work when you incorporate breaks, which luckily is something I'm quite skilled at. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So I've tried to provide you with a little something that can momentarily take your mind of the seemingly ever growing pile of stuff we have to get done. </div>

I give you "I Told My Kids I Ate All Their Hallowe'en Candy." Insta Classic</div>

I'm sure many of you have seen the video, it ran rampant on YouTube a few years back. So this may not be the newest of the most relevant video out there, but it's definitely worth a second look.<br />
<br />
Also, I recommend reading the book which is titled (you guessed it), Christian the Lion.<br />
<br />
That damn lion gets me every time....<br />

What?! Naturally I clicked on it.<br />
<br />
What I found was NOT a Distillers video (insert groan here) but a documentary about some Dr. Burzynski character. My curiosity got the better of me however, so I took a look at it anyways and all of you should too. I have already harassed the hell out of all my friends and classmates, so now it's your turn!<br />
<br />
I won't get into too many details about the film, which is available in its entirety on YouTube, because I <b>really</b> want people to watch it. It's over an hour and a half long, but it is definitely worth the time.<br />
<br />
Dr. Burzynski works in Texas and has been battling the FDA for over two decades as they have been trying to take away his licence. He has been curing patients for years who have been diagnosed with serious and commonly fatal cancer. His method is Antineoplastons, which are non-toxic. While they aren't 100% effective, there are no side effects and are far more successful than chemo and radiation combined. Through his methods, he has also been able to cure some types of cancer for the first time in history!<br />
<br />
A cure like this going public would result in a major loss of money for the FDA as chemo and radiation would more than likely become obsolete. Likewise, if antineoplastons are approved for public use, it will be the first time that a single scientist will have the right to manufacture a cancer drug. The pharmaceutical companies would be SOL. Consequently, Dr. Burzynski has been taken to court many times, including 4 Federal Grand Juries. The FDA even tried to have him thrown in jail and at one point he faced the possibility of serving a combined 290 years in jail.<br />
<br />
One of Dr. Burzynski's patients was Dustin Kunnari. (You can hear all about his and others stories in the video, as well as see his mother emotional plea on behalf of Dr. B's treatment in court.) When Dustin was two and a half, he was diagnosed with medulloblastoma of the brain, a very aggressive form of cancer. His parents began taking him to see Dr. Burzynski. Now years later, he is healthy and completely cancer free.<br />
<br />
Obviously the video does a much better job of explaining than I am, so if you have a few hours of free time in the next coming weeks, you really should take a look. And by that I mean... you better!<br />
<br />

Frankly, it's one of my biggest passions. It's also the reason why I am very nearly late a lot of the time. Since I've started school I've had to develop a whole new routine for waking up which I thought may be of some use to all of you in CreComm.<br />
<br />
Here's a few tips that I find the most helpful:<br />
<br />
-Take your alarm clock and move it AWAY from your bed. Having it nearby makes it harder for the dreaded SNOOZE button to lure you in. Once you're out of bed to turn it off, it makes you far less likely to fall back asleep.<br />
<br />
-Pick the most irritating and repetitive sounding alarm you can find. One that you can't possibly listen to more than a few times and that will even make getting up seem more pleasant than lying there listening to it.<br />
<br />
- If that is STILL not enough, set more than one alarm and have them dispersed around your room. Annoying, yes, but very effective.<br />
<br />
-Avoid all eye contact with your bed. Pretend it isn't even there. One glance is enough to set about a relapse.<br />
<br />
- Keep the temperature in your room unpleasantly cold. That way you don't dawdle and will want to rush to the shower.<br />
<br />
-I used to spend 20 minutes in the shower still stuck in a daze but now when I first get ing I have a burst of very HOT or very COLD water. It will help jolt you awake and get your butt in gear.<br />
<br />
- If you don't already have a coffee maker with a timer, I highly suggest you buy one. It is well worth it. For all of you that don't drink coffee (something I can't even begin to imagine) , START!<br />
<br />
- I like to play loud and aggressive music on my way to school/ work. It gets you pumped up and puts you in a better mood.<br />
<br />
- I've heard exercising in the morning is a great way to wake you up, but I am far too lazy to consider it...<br />

True to form, I volunteered myself to do something that I literally don't have a single idea how to do. I made a promise to someone that I would cook them dinner this weekend.<br />
<br />
I realize that the fact that I'm 22 and have almost no cooking skills whatsoever borders on pathetic but the time for me to learn has come. I was however hoping to ease myself gently into the kitchen and start off with a simple, yet tasty recipe.<br />
<br />
This is where you guys come in. Any of you kitchen challenged people have fast and easy (very, very easy) recipes you could recommend? Preferably one that limit the possibility of me causing someone to get food poisoning would be appreciated. I will, of course, be waiting a few hours to sample it after someone else has. Mama didn't raise no foo.<br />

<strong>Blog Stuggles</strong></div>
<div align="center">
<em>And why I'm just no good at it</em></div>
<div align="center">
<strong></strong></div>
<br />
I am not a natural blogger. While I do occasionally enjoy reading other peoples blogs, I find upkeeping my own more of a chore than anything.<br />
<br />
I hate when people talk just for the sake of talking and never seem to have anything valuable to say. That kind of explains why I dislike blogging so much is because it is not something I do because I want or when I feel I have something of importance to share, but rather because I HAVE to. I have yet to feel the natural impulse to sit down and blog. <br />
<br />
I can't feel good about about having something "out there" with my name attatched to it when it's something I don't feel strongly about. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyLsmHOQuTS4oDQaX1Mp05lzK26yeHs-lZdflZPjtk_m9YbqmoU2fw3AZm9iN6rHMBEDSiF-3IyjcyvoEtBY5CzAzYNqS7jSxjw_YD2ONrcwSpA9k_JW2vGJTSq68yJ08FzEvCny2fKSA/s1600/blogstruggles.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyLsmHOQuTS4oDQaX1Mp05lzK26yeHs-lZdflZPjtk_m9YbqmoU2fw3AZm9iN6rHMBEDSiF-3IyjcyvoEtBY5CzAzYNqS7jSxjw_YD2ONrcwSpA9k_JW2vGJTSq68yJ08FzEvCny2fKSA/s1600/blogstruggles.gif" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So why don't I write about things I feel strongly about? The whole point of a blog is that you want people to read it and therefore have to write on topics that people are willing to spend time looking at. My problem is that there are few people who seem to have the same interests as me and likewise few blogs that interest me. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The easiest blog for me to write so far was the one I did on Bob Dylan. It was the first time I sat down and wrote non stop until it was done. Not surprisingly, the interest in my blog was minimal. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
When it comes down to it, I'm just more of a conversation type of girl. For me, the fun in discussing things is to actually have a discussion. I enjoy hearing what other people think as opposed to just throwing my opinion out there. I've got quite a few things to learn after all.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
And yes I realise people often recieve feedback and there may even be some back and forth discussion but it's just not something I find satisfying. Try as I might, I can't shake the feeling that it's a shallow form of communication. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Too many things can be miscontrued over the internet that can't be as easily in person. Tone and body language are all big parts of communication and are the things that I miss.If I read a classmates blog and wanted to discuss it, I'm the type of person that would actually, you know, go talk to them about it. But that's just me. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
***************</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Of course, I have also included a YouTube video. Here is on Blog I will get on board with. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
This blog is (yet again) a little off topic. It was an especially hectic week for me, as I imagine it was for everyone else in CreComm, so I'm planning to take it easy tonight and watching one of my favourite movies.<br />
<br />
I'm a huge post-folk Bob Dylan fan and Martin Scorsese did an amazing documentary on him called<i style="font-weight: bold;"> No Direction Home</i>. It chronicles Dylan's life from when he was a kid right up until 1966, when due to a motorcycle accident, he disappeared from the public for a few years.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3jut5rSxVVUBJMyHos1HH9Sbt-sz1VmcuZTMYIgdbTvziqb4IKJ8YvHtFBZKps2wLC7KFIKRZ8RzR2MEIkzQanpaNhqnGvDJvv4eU14pvjWCtAVaTe0J51cSMZsjs_FIfRh9bLg3roXo/s1600/dyalb.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="186" rda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3jut5rSxVVUBJMyHos1HH9Sbt-sz1VmcuZTMYIgdbTvziqb4IKJ8YvHtFBZKps2wLC7KFIKRZ8RzR2MEIkzQanpaNhqnGvDJvv4eU14pvjWCtAVaTe0J51cSMZsjs_FIfRh9bLg3roXo/s320/dyalb.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></span><br />
<br />
I know Bob Dylan isn't everyones cup of tea. In fact, I've never meet anyone, hardcore music enthusiasts included, that knew more than a few of his songs and I really think that's a shame. Most people tend to have a skewed idea of both the man and his music.<br />
<br />
Bob Dylan was a badass, no doubt about it, not to mention one of the greatest writers of all time. He practically ruled the 60's. It's been said on both sides that the Beatles influenced Dylan's decision to go electric, and in turn it was Dylan's impeccable and highly unique lyrics that made the Beatles start taking the writing aspect of their songs a lot more seriously. In fact many artists of his time, and certainly after, cite Dylan as one of the rockers who influenced them most. Pearl Jam loves to cover <em>Masters of War</em> and who could forget Jimi Hendrix's cover of <em>All Along the Watchtower.</em> He's a little rock, a little blues, a little punk... he has songs all over the map. That's why I struggle with the concept that so many people have so little interest.<br />
<br />
Sure his musical capabilities can be called into question, he definitely wasn't a spectacular guitarist, his voice is not the most pure sounding, he can't hit all the notes and some of his songs are 10 minutes plus. But that man can emote like no other. On an angry song like Idiot Wind, you can practically see him snarling, there's no confusing the feeling behind any of his music, and that's what is so thrilling. <br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9rX1JhkmUyp9fRr0RlY7Pp4y1YJC07RFkpe99RgRmiXc0od_0iDiluSWEjiiuGmW-CIQrohT3bJIbnM0L-5DWK9-U0szj2Izbw_KgqcaVvynqUq-wr1l2JEMwYyZ1Vf_Ks9ecHrUOZrg/s1600/nodireciton.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" rda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9rX1JhkmUyp9fRr0RlY7Pp4y1YJC07RFkpe99RgRmiXc0od_0iDiluSWEjiiuGmW-CIQrohT3bJIbnM0L-5DWK9-U0szj2Izbw_KgqcaVvynqUq-wr1l2JEMwYyZ1Vf_Ks9ecHrUOZrg/s1600/nodireciton.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
He's also kept his career going for almost 50 years, transforming and reinventing himself time and again. He's even reinvented most of his old material. I saw him in concert a couple of years ago, one of my life goals, and while I recognized all the songs, he had revamped them almost to the point where if you weren't listening carefully enough, you would not have recognised them.<br />
<br />
My feelings about that? In my opinion, he's Bob Dylan and he can pretty much do whatever the hell he wants. I think if he's earned anything, it's the right to perform his music the way he sees fit. Can you imagine playing the same song the same way for decades? I actually enoyed hearing the songs I loved in an entirely different way. I left that night on a total high. <br />
<br />
I met some people years later who had been at the same concert and they expressed to me how disappointed they were. I've heard that a lot actually. And I admit they do have a valid point. If you're went to see an artist, paid good money to hear the songs, and then when you got there you had no idea what was going on, you undoubtedly would feel a little letdown. <br />
<br />
To quote Bob, who quoted Abraham Lincoln, "Half the people can be part right all of the time, some of the people can be all right part of the time, but all the people can't be all right all of the time."<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMkYQlW-S-MnKo410gh6E9HA2dvUHc5qxtso9XXX_AGLyRrSla6F3wCaT_m1Bge1aatpTqH2sTpIe-DxcV57bER3UyjsfJz5iXiaK__S7fT_hfTvGFTWGw9zmPeJN6zzz_-78R_JnidKc/s1600/fail.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" rda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMkYQlW-S-MnKo410gh6E9HA2dvUHc5qxtso9XXX_AGLyRrSla6F3wCaT_m1Bge1aatpTqH2sTpIe-DxcV57bER3UyjsfJz5iXiaK__S7fT_hfTvGFTWGw9zmPeJN6zzz_-78R_JnidKc/s320/fail.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div align="center">
( add an auto- in front of that.)</div>
<br />
<br />
But I'll convince you all of his greatness some other time. Now to the YouTube portion of the blog. Here is one of my favourite parts of the movie. Remember, it was the 60's and "rockstars" were still a fairly new concept. Besides Elvis, not too many people had dealt with the invasiveness of the press and there were no rules how to go about it. Back then Dylan was being toted as a "prophet" or the "voice of the generation" among other absurd titles, all of which Dylan resented. He was also known for getting a little nasty if you ticked him off. He's answers are almost always extremely witty and pretty hilarious. <br />
<br />
The scene I'm going to show is Dylan being prodded for answers by a bunch of journalists and he seems to have very few answers. I can understand how he feels like now thanks to CreComm. Take it away Bob.<br />

There are people with too much (I wish). And then there are the people who have so much free time on their hands, it's <b>ridiculous</b>. What can be even more ridiculous is discovering just what it is they do to fill those hours of freedom.<br />
<br />
Case in point. <b>Wake up Kitty: the Talking kitty YouTube series</b>. I won't lie to you. I've seen almost every single one, and by my own free will. I'm a little ashamed, but this is the kind of stuff I love, videos so completely stupid I just can't get enough. I've even made most of my friends sit through a couple of episodes, to which they're eternally grateful I assure you. (insert heavy sarcasm here)<br />
<br />
I know no words that can do these video's justice. So to give you a better understanding about what I'm talking about, heres the first video from the series.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/kjZrUn03kXI?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
Oh that Sylvester....<br />
<br />
But anyways, this video had me glued to YouTube for days straight. I watched as many episodes out of the series as I could. Rewatching them and telling all my friends about it. I'm still not sure just how many episodes their actually are. There's half episodes, extras and even a Wake up Kitty music video! (Don't you worry, we'll be looking at that gem later)<br />
<br />
When you first meet Sylvester, he's ruling the roost. But then, something rather unfortunate happens. His owner decides to get a dog. Shenanigans ensue and just when you think it couldn't get any better, along comes Gibson! The uber cute mute kitty. Here's the video.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/yFMQEdWU6NQ?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
The more I watched, the more I felt as though I knew this kooky family of animals. I loved Sylvester's snakiness, Shelby's sweetness and watching little Gibson learn his first word. In short, I was obsessed.<br />
<br />
Then one day, someone (who shall remain nameless) began to make fun of Steve, creator of the should-be-famous series. I was appalled. I was hurt. I was out for blood.<br />
<br />
He insisted that he must be a loser, and that the girlfriend in the videos was really his "girlfriend." (For the record: I don't believe either accusation!)<br />
<br />
"How dare you?!" I wanted to know. Didn't this person know genius when he saw it?<br />
<br />
Buuut in a calmer state of mind, I'll admit this may be a severe case of free time overload. There are a lot of videos, all of which require editing and they're posted pretty regularly. But I suppose it's nice that he was able to use YouTube to do something productive(ish) while hopefully looking for a job or something...<br />
<br />
Regardless, I love the videos, probably because I was someone with way too much free time on my hands when I discovered them. Those days are over, but the kitty remains the same.<br />
<br />
And now as promised, the music video to top all others: KITTY DOESN'T LIKE.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I know I'm not the only one who's feeling a little worn down today. There's a pack of us Cre Comm-ers who are looking a little worse for the wear. We all seem to have Coffee in hand, make-up free and in desperate need of a few more zzz's...such is life in our program. But it's not for nothing. <br />
<br />
Last night I went to Dylan O'Connor's on Portage to watch the results come forth in the election. I sat among others who pledged their vote for Sharon Blady, the NDP candidate in Kirkfield Park and although I'm not an overly political person, it was hard for me not to get swept up in all of the excitement and then... the confusion.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilTOAeAguZ6B2sVInjneZ-H-VSjy9gp5itnDM6cALlejWHJqU8udLHDYIElZ5QFVBhlDYazeo8pc8xVpQSmPuZtnCmADsw7FTC7HdpmatVibHgkT2FyZmyyapGmd4GNOz5sg_y-GxVvBw/s1600/confused.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilTOAeAguZ6B2sVInjneZ-H-VSjy9gp5itnDM6cALlejWHJqU8udLHDYIElZ5QFVBhlDYazeo8pc8xVpQSmPuZtnCmADsw7FTC7HdpmatVibHgkT2FyZmyyapGmd4GNOz5sg_y-GxVvBw/s320/confused.jpg" width="174" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
It seems we all were a little hasty in declaring victory over the PC's as the first results roled in, which seemed to state Blady as the winner. That's when the party really began! Everyone was drinking it up and applauding, having a grand old time.<br />
<br />
Unfortunately, the report did not include the advance votes and seeing as Blady and the PC candidate, Kelly de Groot, were only 50 votes apart, the race was hardly over. Can you say bummer? I sure did.<br />
<br />
I was told that without a doubt Sharon Blady would be showing up that night, but at 11 pm I gave up hope as even the CTV crew that was hanging around to talk to her took off. Luckily, one of her campaign workers was extrememly helpful and ended up giving me a wicked quote. <br />
<br />
It made for an interesting night and a tough paper to write. Now Elections Manitoba is stating Blady is leading with a 27 vote lead. A recount is in the cards. And that is why people should vote! I have heard a lot of people say that they don't bother cause their vote doesn't count. A race this close shows how naive an outlook that is. And as cliche and cheesy as it sounds, every vote DOES count.<br />
<br />
But enough of my lecture. All I will say now is GO ORANGE!<br />
<br />

(This is Sharon Blady. She won in 2007, will she win again?)</div>

It focused on the question on a lot of peoples minds, will printed news soon be a thing of the past? <br />
<br />
I think everyone is aware of social media and how it's changing the world and how we receive our information, so I won't bore you with the details of that. Newspapers everywhere are going out of print or if they're still afloat, are struggling to remain important. It's unfortunate, yes, but not at all surprising.<br />
<br />
What is shocking is to think that <strong>THE</strong> New York Times could ever be toppled, although there are those that see it as inevitable. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div>After seeing this movie, I am not entirely convinced one way or the other but it seemed clear to me that the Times is not going down without a fight. They are trying to hold to their long held traditions but also stay relevant and move with the times. (no pun intended) <br />
<br />
Now.... to my favourite part of the movie! I can sum it up in two words. DAVID CARR. <br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeIMeS6TdDKpjyGvEjdL5BQ2615fEWvY5L52SQAOuGY5v29EbTJzqPsEwMb04aN4GcX_LMN6X-111u5bXFDD33IY3xzWmdM5wChH9-G2s_nmuGTjPAWKOxM8NhbBOGibXLLGaNKNK3x6s/s1600/08_carr_lgl.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeIMeS6TdDKpjyGvEjdL5BQ2615fEWvY5L52SQAOuGY5v29EbTJzqPsEwMb04aN4GcX_LMN6X-111u5bXFDD33IY3xzWmdM5wChH9-G2s_nmuGTjPAWKOxM8NhbBOGibXLLGaNKNK3x6s/s320/08_carr_lgl.jpg" width="212" /></a></div><br />
<div align="center">(Here he is... the one and only, David Carr. The undeniable star of the movie.)</div><div align="center"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">David Carr is a columnist at the New York Times and he is one hell of a character. I won't lie, there were definitely parts of the movie that didn't hold my interest. But as soon as this guy was on screen, I paid attention. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Carr is a former crack addict and does not mess around. At one point in the movie he is conducting an interview, speedily typing away on his computer, capturing every word, when the interviewee made a very bad move. He took a crack at the Times. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Carr halted the interview, looked up, gave the man one look and told him that he had better start showing some respect. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Not being an idiot, he did. I wouldn't either. And that's why Dave's the man. (I can call him that, we're tight now.)</div><br />
<br />
<em>Here's a look at the trailor for anyone interested!</em> <br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/rwTMFXgf95c?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>Ali Buckberroughhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02547618173638414914noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1251140957990202982.post-31711566951253016922011-09-21T19:18:00.001-05:002011-09-21T20:49:17.905-05:00Baby... you'll be famousStardom for the average joe has become more of a possibility then ever. Want to be famous? A webcam may prove to be your golden ticket.<br />
<div><br />
</div><div>Before, in order to make it big you had to keep at it, pay your dues and get dealt a very lucky hand. But all of that sounds, well.... hard. And if theres anything people don't like, it's hard work. Luckily for us, we live in the age of where everything is at our fingertips... including a record deal. </div><div><br />
</div><div>Case in point...Justin Bieber. Talentless hack? Yep. </div><div>Richer than you or I will probably ever be? Oh hell yeah. </div><div>Blood, sweat and tears put into getting famous? Zilch.</div><div><br />
</div><div>Whether we want to or not, we all know the story. Child puts video on YouTube, video goes viral and poof! Bieber Fever. </div><div><br />
</div><div>YouTube has not only revolutionized how we get our entertainment but also how we choose our entertainers. Even celebrities have taken notice. Ellen Degeneres in particular likes to feature her favourite YouTube "stars" on her show.</div><div><br />
</div><div>As Winnipeggers, we've all heard of Maria Aragon. A video of her singing a cover of Lady Gaga's "Born this Way" got so huge Lady Gaga herself took notice and Maria was flown out to perform with the star.</div><div><br />
</div><div>I have a hard time understanding this phenomenon but there it is. YouTube is the modern day agent. I've heard my cat Angus is very photogenic, I think it's time to start filming some videos. He's gonna make me a rich woman one day... </div><div><br />
</div><div>Anyways... here is the infamous video for all two of you who haven't seen it. </div><div><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/xG0wi1m-89o?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div><div><br />
</div><div><br />
</div><div><br />
</div><div>NOTE: I am NOT a Josh Groban, Justin Bieber or Lady Gaga fan just to clarify. They just happen to be good YouTube examples... I seriously have to start looking for better ones. Yikes. </div><div><br />
